![]() ![]() Dr. Peyton Simon Kingston grew up in a relatively nuclear family for most of his life. His mom, Victoria, and dad, Ben, were high school sweethearts who married in their second year of college at Yale. Ben went on to become a successful pro-bono attorney and Victoria studied a Bachelor of Arts in Literature, a Master of Education, going on to becoming an English teacher at a high school in Boston. They started their family once they finished their education, welcoming their first son, Peyton, within a month of trying. After Victoria was diagnosed with Endometriosis, it took another seven years to succeed in having their second, Tori (or Torrence Jameson, named after his grandfather). They had all intention of stopping because Tori was a difficult birth but by sheer miracle, Victoria fell pregnant four months after Tori's birth and they were over the moon to get a little girl, Andrea, who would soon be affectionately known as Andi. Initially, there were no real bad times in their family. They were all close and supportive, they had some of the best parents in the world, and didn't face any significant challenges. Peyton always had a dream of going to Med School to become a doctor and worked hard to achieve it and then some, leading to him making Valedictorian of his year and being accepted Harvard Pre-Med and ultimately, Harvard Med School. Because the campus was only a stone's throw away from where they lived in Boston, he stayed at home up until graduate school. Everything in life rolled pretty smoothly for a little while, until Peyton was in his early twenties. Prior to that, Peyton didn't really fall for the temptations of college, like too much partying and drinking. In his junior year of high school, he dated a girl for a year, until she moved to the west coast for college and Peyton wanting to focus on study rather than trying to force a long-distance relationship when they hadn't been all that close in general. He casually dated at college but nothing stuck with his study load because he had hopes of getting a Residency in Emergency Medicine in New York. Everything was going great, until his family's world bottomed out from under them. His baby sister, Andi, was diagnosed with leukemia when she was fourteen and Tori was fifteen, living in London on a prestigious scholarship in a performing arts school. It was a massive blow on the family. The prognosis was initially good and they expected her to make a full recovery with chemotherapy. Cancer would be something Andi fought for nearly four years. When she was sixteen, the horrible news came that her bone marrow transplant where Tori was a donor had failed and chemo was no working. She was given a terminal diagnosis of twelve months to live. She only made seven months and passed away just before Christmas when Peyton had just finished his internship and was pegged to score a Residency in Emergency at Mount Sinai in New York. What Peyton kept a secret from his family for months was that Andi asked him to help her with an assisted death because she wanted to choose when she went and couldn't handle anymore pain. She wanted to go while she was still okay to say goodbye and know for herself when it was time to go. Peyton was sick with the weight of the decision but ultimately, he couldn't say no to her. He couldn't let her keep going in pain if it's not what she wanted. He almost screwed up his internship in the final days and risked his Residency with the trauma of having to give Andi an injection of medication that ended her life... albeit peacefully, with Peyton sitting with her holding her hand. From then on, life became unbearable and he didn't cope, anger hitting him with a vengeance. Peyton's went about life on autopilot, focusing only on work so his grief and guilt didn't eat him alive and destroy him. He started to binge drink whenever he had days off, the long hours of his new Residency taking everything he had. It culminated in him lashing out at Andi's best friend since they were six years old, Sasha. Sasha used to be closed to all of Andi’s family members and Peyton had been like a big brother to him too, but when, in his own crippling grief, Sasha hadn’t been able to emotionally connect to them after Andi died, Peyton had gotten angry at him and accused him of writing her off in favour of his new flashy boyfriend, Broadway actor and musician, Justin Campbell. Eventually, once he realised how wrong he had been to ever think Sash would do something like that, Peyton had emailed him and apologised for everything he said, explaining that he didn’t deal well with Andi’s death because he had been in denial about her being terminal. He never meant to take it out on Sasha. Sasha never replied. He had been hurt as it was with the accusation, but even more so that Peyton diluted his relationship with Justin down to a vehicle to wash his hands of the burden of Andi’s death. Sasha knew Peyton was here Mount Sinai because he had seen him when Justin was rushed to hospital with the Serotonin Toxicity (a complication of medication for his mental illness), but avoided him. Peyton only caught sight of him when Justin was being transferred from resus up to the ICU but Sasha was too upset and shaken to talk to him. It was only once Sasha himself ended up in the Emergency Room after a car crash that Peyton finally had a chance to talk to him and they had a good cry together, setting aside what happened. Peyton was so relieved because he felt like he had fractured relationships with everyone important to him, not being able to cope with ending Andi's life for her. Eventually, he couldn't live with it anymore and confessed to his family what he did. His parents understood, but Tori couldn't cope. He lost his shit completely and had a psychological breakdown with the news that Andi chose to die without letting him say goodbye while he was still in London, not giving him a chance to come home to say goodbye, and that Peyton did it. He blamed Peyton completely and stopped talking to him. Peyton respected his little brother's grief at first, but couldn't let it go on. The hardest conversaation he ever had in his life was making amends with Tori and trying to help him understand why Andi wanted to go on her terms. He wasn't sure Tori would ever be able to get over it and their close bond as brothers would ever get back to what it was. But family was the most important thing in the world and Peyton shoved his own grief and trauma aside to take care of family through their grief as best he could. Original Character |
